I have always wanted to write a romantic/erotic novel, but always get hung up on details and where I want the story to go. I am never sure where I want the story to begin or end, so please offer opinions!
What romance novel featuring a black heroine would you read? What would the story encompass? What would the love interest look like? Who would he be? How much sexual detail do you want?
Personally, I like the forbidden and the mysterious. Something very dangerous liasons, but I also like something where the characters fight their sexual attractions only to succumb to it later, all under the pressure of something climactic (kidnapping) where the heroine is being rescued (Yes, black women like knights in shining armor).
I also really like femme fatales. Women like Marlene Dietrich in Shanghai Express: A cigarette smoking "fallen" woman who loves men, and loves "loving" men, but wants to settle down and find romance with one (kinda based on my life).
Thoughts are appreciated!

Hey Hey. I don't read Zane. She leaves me cold and bored. I do read alot of historical erotic romance...yeah that's a mouth full and that's the official category according to Romantic Times. I enjoy the works of Susan Johnson or Robin Schone. As for the best contemporary erotica...that is hands down the late, great Roberta Latow...she's out of print BUT she's worth the trouble of acquiring especially her stuff from the 80s.
As for movies...Zalman King is the master of getting the woman's angle on sex and romance right.
From 9 1/2 Weeks to Two Moon Junction to Red Shoe Diaries...the tone of the stories, the hotness of the male leads to the stories themselves...it just all worked.
Black women do not have any visual equivalent to RSD...there were a few episodes that featured Black leads BUT not many...I would give my right pinkie toe to see Marcus Patrick in a RSD type of flick.
Having seen him butt rape a dude in DESCENT I can vouch that Mr. Patrick is more than capable to get lowdown and dirty.
I have to agree with Chele Belle to a point. I have read a lot of Zane's work and while I'm not gonna front and say I've never enjoy it, at some point, she does leave me bored as well. A lot of the material seems redundant.
Your ideas of what you'd like to write about are very interesting and sounds like something I would definitely read. Please don't abandon the idea. I'd definitely check your work out.
I too am a writer and I would like to suggest that you start with whatever you have, the story will work itself out.
